30 Minutes in the Life | March 2021

“Wild sings the bird of the heart

in the forests our lives.”

~Mary Oliver

Winter’s last Hoo-rah…

March came in like a lamb, with longed for warmer temperatures after the bout of extreme cold we experienced in February. We looked forward to spring with anticipation.

But as it always is on the prairies, winter was not finished yet. We received a bountiful snowfall one last time. And with that snowfall, the winter birds came to the feeders by the number.

I love photographing the winter birds that grace my feeders during these times. I love how the plumage stands out against the stark whiteness of the snow.

They also seem to hang out near the feeders a little bit longer, affording me more time to photograph them.

One this day, I was visited by redpolls, woodpeckers and nuthatches. A most welcome visit was from a pair of female pine grosbeaks…a sure sign that spring is indeed on the way.
